American Airlines announced Monday it will match the federal government’s $1,000 Trump Account seed deposit for the children of its eligible employees. [1]
The Trump Accounts, officially designated as 530A accounts, are tax-deferred investment options for United States residents under 18 years old. Children born between 2025 and 2028 receive an initial $1,000 deposit from the Treasury Department. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said the company wants to help its workers. “At American Airlines, our purpose is to care for people on life’s journey, and that includes helping our team members build a strong financial future for themselves and their families,” Isom said in a statement.

Starting in 2027, the airline plans to allow eligible employees to contribute up to $2,500 of their pretax earnings to the accounts each year. This option will be available to roughly one-third of the airline’s 140,000 global workers. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent praised the decision. “It is encouraging to see our nation’s leading companies, including American Airlines, supporting this effort by offering matching contributions for their employees,” Bessent said.
More than 50 employers, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, have promised to contribute to the accounts. Roughly 1.4 million enrolled children are currently in line to receive the federal seed deposit. Family members and friends can also add up to $5,000 a year to a child’s account.
The new matching program comes as American Airlines tries to close an earnings gap with competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. The company carries about $35 billion in debt and recently reorganized its senior leadership team.
