The Missouri Conservation Commission gave final approval for regulation changes requiring campers to purchase a permit to camp on Missouri Department of Conservation areas.[1] The new requirement will begin in March 2027.[2]
The new permit will cost $5 and cover up to five days of camping for groups of up to 10 people. This rule will apply even if campers use fewer days or have a smaller group.

Campers must plainly label their sleeping units, such as tents or campers, with durable material. The label must show the permit holder’s full name and address or their conservation number. It must be visible from the outside of the unit.
Each person will be limited to three consecutive permits and six total permits per year. Groups larger than 10 people will need both a Special Use Permit and a camping permit.
Currently, camping is free and does not require registration on MDC areas. This lack of identification has created difficulties for conservation agents managing vandalism, illegal activities, and safety concerns. The new permits will help staff monitor areas and build positive relationships with campers.

Permits will be available for purchase online, at permit vendors, or by phone starting in March. They can also be displayed on the MO Fishing and MO Hunting apps.
The Commission also approved a change allowing campers to collect dead and downed wood for personal fire use. Previously, firewood collection was not allowed on MDC areas.
