Sir Ian, known for his acting in “The Lord of the Rings” and in “Chariots of Fire” passed away in a hospital with family near. His fourth wife announced his death.

Background

Ian was born Ian Holm Cuthbert on September 12, 1931. He was born in Essex. In his early education, he joined an amateur society before an actor helped him train for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Although he was accepted there, his education had a few pauses. This happened once he was called for National service to the British Army, and again once when he went on an acting tour of the United States. He finally did graduate in 1953.

Acting Jobs

Ian was a star of the Royal  Shakespeare Company before moving to television and film. Some of his more famous parts were of Bilbo Baggins in “Lord Of The Rings” and King Lear in the theater production of “King Lear” and numerous other Shakespearean performances. Throughout his career, he earned numerous awards including a Knight Bachelor in 1998 for services to drama.

Personal Life

He was married four times. He fathered five children from three women and all of them are involved in the acting business. Sir Ian died on June 19 at the age of 88, due to Parkinson’s.
