Alton, Mo. – The Alton City Council met on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, for its monthly meeting. After opening with the pledge, they immediately got down to business.
Residential Concerns
First speaking was a landowner who was double-billed for her water. She has since gone to the assessor and had her property properly assessed as a single unit. Once the city receives the updated information from the assessor, they will adjust her bill.
Next
Jerry spoke about the need for accountability for park funds. Taxpayers should be able to follow the money, appropriations, and the project.
Pro-Term Mayor
Marilyn raised questions about the pro-term mayor. As the mayor who was elected resigned immediately, the aldermen elected Ron Campbell. Her question was whether there would be a mayoral candidate on April’s election ballot. The board replied that, yes, if anyone fills out the paperwork, he can run for mayor.
The mayor has a two-year term. Those interested in running for mayor need to fill out the paperwork by December of this year. Anyone running for the two alderman positions needs to fill out the appropriate paperwork, too. There will be two positions we vote on in April.
Sewer
The sewer is still not repaired; they are waiting on parts.
Parks
They discussed the felling of trees to make room for the playground equipment. What should be done with the stumps?
Also, in contrast to the last open meeting, they are Not having grass under the new playground equipment. It will be pea gravel. Rubber is too expensive. Also, they have been taking sealed bids for work on a new pavilion. It will be down by the new playground. It will have a concrete base and electricity. It will Not replace the current pavilion. That one will remain.
Fire/Police
Funds were approved for what is necessary to bring the vehicles up to code.
Testing
Mandatory random drug testing will be conducted by city employees. The first one will be mandatory; subsequent ones will be random or occur in case of an accident.
