Kansas City Chiefs Are Going to Super Bowl LIV for First Time in Over 50 Years

Kansas City, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs went up against the Tennessee Titans January 19, 2020, in the AFC Championship Game. The Chiefs who lost last year in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots 37-31, redeemed themselves winning 35-24. This is the first time the Chiefs are going to the Super Bowl for the first time in fifty years. Chiefs Chris Jones was also playing after not being able to play from a calf injury. The temperature was a brisk 17 degrees Fahrenheit, but it felt like 5 degrees. The game was held in Kansas City, Missouri at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs Have Slow Start Again

The Chiefs once again fell into a point deficit in the first quarter. The Titans started with a 3-point field goal. When the Chiefs got the ball back, Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback, almost had an interception, but it was ruled as incomplete. The Chiefs first drive ended up as a punt. When the Titans got the ball back, and they were only a couple of yards from the end zone, Titans Derrick Henry, the running back, took the snap and ran in for the touchdown. The Titans also got the extra field goal; the score was 10-0. The Chiefs got the ball back; Patrick Mahomes threw it to Tyreek Hill, Chiefs wide receiver, and Hill caught it, just barely, before Mahomes was sacked. When the Chiefs scored a touchdown from Travis Kelce, Chiefs tight end, it was ruled as an incomplete pass. But right after that, the Chiefs got a touchdown from Tyreek Hill and made the extra point. The Chiefs were making their comeback.

In the second quarter, the Titans got another touchdown and extra field goal; the score at that time was 17-7, with the Titans still in the lead. But the Chiefs matched it with two touchdowns, one from Tyreek Hill and another from Patrick Mahomes. The kicker also nailed the extra points. On Mahomes touchdown, he dodged two defensive players, and it looked like he would go out of bounds, but no, he avoided another player, and then while hauling two more defensive players, he fell into the end zone and got the touchdown. The run was 27 yards; the Chiefs also got the extra points on both touchdowns. The score at halftime was 21-17 with the Chiefs in the lead. Before the half ended, though, the fans were recorded at 104 sound decibels.

Second Half

Neither team scored any points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs had two touchdown drives back-to-back. One was from Damien Williams, Chiefs running back, and another one was a 60-yard pass from Mahomes to Sammy Watkins. They got the extra field goal’s too. The score was 35-17. The Titans had the final score of the game with a touchdown and field goal. The final score was 35-24, with the Chiefs winning and going to Super Bowl LIV. Before the game ended, when the Chiefs punted the ball, both De’Anthony Thomas and DeMarcus Robinson struck the referee hard. The ref was okay, just a little shaken up.

Patrick Mahomes completed 23 of 35, threw for 294 yards, and threw for three touchdowns. Mahomes also had eight carries for 53 yards and had one rushing touchdown. He had the most rushing yards for his team. The Chiefs are now going to Super Bowl LIV which is February 2, 2020. The last time they were in a Super Bowl was in the 1969 season.
