Alton, Mo. – Although it is only mid-November, Alton, Missouri is seeing its first measurable snowfall. Schoolchildren are excited about a November sledding day while hunters are groaning..

Friday Forecast

After a warm week with temperatures reaching the 80s, a colder Friday was on the way. Everyone knew it. That was more typical weather for Alton than summer-like temperatures. And colder it was! The mercury barely crept over the 50-degree mark. Strong north winds seemed to howl right through one. Veteran’s Day parades had few watchers. Grey clouds and even mist in areas permeated the day.

Overnight

With the wind yet raging as Alton people went to sleep, the forecasters planted seeds of hope in children’s minds. The hope of snow. Parents were dubious at the thought. Snow rarely comes in November! Perhaps one may see a few flurries, but that was nothing to concern oneself over.

Even those awake at midnight would have seen snow falling. But the thought of it melting was all that entered the mind.

Morning

However, no matter the time one awoke on Saturday, looking out the window brought thoughts of January weather. Alton can see 3-4 inches of snow. The ground, even the grass, is all covered. Roofs and fenceposts have 2.5 inches of white stuff. Although tapering off, many deer hunters are probably thinking: Is it worth it today?

Admittedly, most community members did go out and shop yesterday. This was in anticipation of inclement weather. While not believing the weathermen, we do prepare for the worst. Alton can sit back while we wait for the snow to melt. There is no hurry. We see the beauty and the white, clean wonder of it all.

Deer Hunting

Alton does not usually see any snow, flurries, or otherwise, before November 19. While this time of year may see rain, snow during deer season is highly unusual. However, for those hunting, the white background does make seeing the deer much easier, including their trails. After the storm passed, they are more likely to be moving. So for those brave-hearted individuals who withstand the elements, Saturday may be a terrific day to hunt while the children are out sledding.
