This November, voters in Idaho, Nevada, Virginia, and Missouri will decide on major state abortion measures.[1] Social scientists and legal professors are evaluating the evidence behind common claims ahead of the elections.
Statistics show that about 1% of abortions happen at 21 weeks or later. With over one million abortions happening annually, this accounts for roughly 12,000 late-term procedures each year.
State laws do not prohibit medical treatment for miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when an embryo implants outside the uterus, and a miscarriage is the natural death of an unborn child.
Every state with abortion restrictions either excludes these procedures from their definition or allows them as medical emergencies.

Researchers have found that most later-term abortions are not due to medical emergencies or fetal anomalies. Instead, they often involve relationship conflicts or indecision.
Podcaster Joe Rogan highlighted this trend in a recent broadcast. “I know someone who got a late-term abortion in New York, and it was just because the boyfriend didn’t want to have the baby and they waited too long. … I’m like, ‘You guys just killed a baby.’”
While some want you to believe that doctors are fleeing states with restrictive abortion laws, that is not true. Nor are we back in the 1900’s when a woman would need a coat hanger to have the procedure done.
Demographics surrounding the issue have also shifted over time. While women support abortion access more than men today, this gender gap only widened significantly in the 2020s.
While some say that women support abortion, that is not always the case. An abortion can affect their health for the rest of their lives.
Christians for decades have been pro-life, supporting the unborn. It is a slippery slope to permit abortions, then euthanasia, then worse ideas. Besides, the Bible does say that if a pregnant woman is injured and loses the baby in the womb, the perpetrator will pay ‘eye for eye and life for life.’
Institutional messaging has changed over the years as well. The Democratic Party removed the word “rare” from its official platform on abortion in 2008.
Voters in the four states, including Missouri, will soon weigh these evaluated claims against the proposed constitutional amendments and laws.
One needs to consider carefully which way he will vote on Tuesday.
