Koshkonong, Mo. – The Oregon County Historical Society is bringing history to life with its summer programs.  Kids of all ages can come, hear stories, do activities, and have a snack. One month, a French trapper came to speak. This month, they learned about Betsy Ross and the flag. With over 30 in attendance each time, the Oregon County Historical Society may need to look into a larger building.

Who Came?

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the Oregon County Historical Society gathered children of all ages to learn about Betsy Ross and our first flag, practice cursive writing, do a museum scavenger hunt, and end with outdoor sack races. The event began promptly at 1:00 pm on Saturday. Children from babies and toddlers through middle schoolers showed up to participate. Parents were there to chaperone. Approximately 38 people were present.

Schedule

The children gathered in a circle on the floor to hear from Betsy Ross as she talked about the need for a flag and how it symbolized the thirteen colonies.

Afterward, the students sat at tables and practiced cursive writing. Then they could write their own ‘John Hancock’ on faded paper. They were given prizes for neatness.Desk work

While searching for scavenger hunt items, they ate blue and red snow cones.

Those who came will long remember learning about the flag and having old-fashioned fun. We encourage the historical society to do this as often as possible.
