Red Strawberry's in a Bowl

May 20 is a national holiday encouraging people to go out and pick strawberries. While the temperatures have not heated up as much as in mid-summer, people of all ages can go out to strawberry fields and pick ripe red berries.

Why This Date?

May 20 has been celebrated as National Strawberry Picking Day for a long time. Because of their nutritional content, strawberries were often used for medicine. Coming after winter, a sweet fruit high in vitamin C was a sure welcome.

Nutritional Content

Strawberries are high in nutrients. Besides being a sweet fruit most people enjoy, they are loaded with vitamin C, folic acid, antioxidants, and fiber [1]. In fact, strawberries contain more vitamin C than oranges.

Fun Facts

While strawberries now come in different colors- red, white, and even blue- the nutritional content remains the same. Each berry contains approximately 200 seeds.

Recipes

As everyone knows how to use Google, a list of recipes is unnecessary. However, ideas to get you searching can be a help. Try strawberry shortcake, ice cream, smoothies, shakes, and muffins.
