History of the Salvation Army

You don’t try and get the job of bell ringing; you volunteer for bell ringing. Bell ringing is from the end of November to Christmas Eve every year. The money raised in the red kettle goes to support disaster relief, soup kitchens, drug and alcohol counseling, homeless shelters, and so much more. The Salvation Army is the second-largest charity in America. The Army was founded by William Booth, an evangelistic minister, in 1865 in London, England. Booth’s early motivation was to convert poor Londoners to Christianity. The Salvation Army, as it came to be called, came to the United States around 1880.

In the United States, there are nearly 8,000 Salvation Army locations, more than three million volunteers who are assisting nearly thirty million people a year.  [1] Across the world, the Salvation Army operates in over 100 countries.
