The Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development, Anne Hazlett, has recently announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) would be giving $181 million to twenty-seven different states. This money would be used to help improve the infrastructure of the state among other things.

Who Does This Help?

The funds will be given to twenty-seven different states to invest in their rural communities. These states include: Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia. 1.1 million civilians are expected to be affected by this funding. [1]

What Will the Funding be Used For?

The funding will be used for rural areas to make improvements in their communities and provide necessary facilities such as schools, libraries, and equipment to maintain roadways.

“Infrastructure is a foundation for quality of life and economic opportunity in small towns across our country,” Hazlett said. “Under the leadership of Secretary Sonny Perdue, USDA is committed to being a strong partner to building prosperity in rural America through modern infrastructure.” [2]

The state of Missouri will be receiving $541,000  in loans and $193,675 in grants. This is to help rural communities create opportunities for themselves and better their towns.

“I want to thank Secretary Perdue and the USDA for their commitment to providing support and sustainability to rural America,” said Governor Parson. “In order to continue to thrive in our agricultural industry, we need to provide these communities with the proper infrastructure and necessary facilities to maintain a strong quality of life. Through these investments, our rural areas will be able to acquire the modern tools they need.” [3]
