With summer holiday celebrations underway, the Missouri Department of Conservation is urging the public to be careful with potential fire sources to prevent wildfires. [1]
The agency recommends extreme caution when handling fireworks, campfires, and off-road vehicles.
Fireworks
Individuals should not light fireworks in areas where sparks could ignite dry grass or leaves. The MDC advises keeping an approved fire extinguisher and a water supply close by to douse flames.
“The public is encouraged to check with local authorities regarding any active fireworks bans or open burning restrictions.”
The area around the discharge zone should be thoroughly wet down. Fireworks are strictly prohibited in all conservation areas.
The public is encouraged to check with local authorities for any active bans on fireworks or open-burning restrictions.
Outdoor Burning
Burning outdoors during the wrong conditions can make fires nearly impossible to control. These conditions include dry grass, high temperatures, low humidity, and wind.
Local fire departments can provide information on current burn bans. Anyone who starts a fire for any reason is held responsible for resulting damages.
Driving Off Road
Wildfires can also start when a vehicle’s hot catalytic converter comes into contact with dry fuel, such as tall grass. Drivers should avoid parking over dry grass or leaf piles.
Vehicles driven off-road should be regularly inspected to ensure brake and fuel lines are intact and free of oil leaks. Drivers should carry an approved fire extinguisher and check ATVs for spark arresters.
Campfires
Campers must clear a generous area around fire rings and store unused firewood at a safe distance from the flames.
Flammable liquids like gasoline or kerosene should never be used to start a fire. Fires should be kept small and controllable.
Extinguishing tools, including a rake, shovel, and a bucket of water, should remain close. Campfires must be fully extinguished every night and before leaving the campsite.
