Surprising Fact: Milk Hydrates Much Better Than Water

When people need a drink to cool down, water is the normal choice. However, an unexpected beverage can keep the body hydrated longer. Milk contains natural electrolytes that help the body hold onto fluids better than plain water. [1]. You might want to stock up while this heat spell lasts.

Studies

Registered dietitian Joy Bauer explains that both skim and whole milk are very effective at keeping people hydrated.  Small studies have shown that the natural sodium found in milk acts as an electrolyte. Along with this sodium, the fat and protein in milk also work together to keep that hydration inside the body longer.

Staying hydrated is a big challenge during these hot summer months. Certain groups of people need to pay closer attention to their daily hydration. This includes older adults, people who spend a lot of time outside, and those taking certain medications like GLP-1s.

Electrolytes

People who work out for more than an hour, sweat heavily, or have been sick often need extra electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals that balance the water inside and outside of human cells. Some individuals are natural salty sweaters and lose more salt through their sweat than ordinary people. These individuals may need to use extra electrolytes more often.

For the average person, drinking plain water and eating regular meals provides enough electrolytes to stay healthy. When extra hydration is needed, experts recommend drinking milk, coconut water, or pairing plain water with a salty snack.
