The Alton, Missouri, Chamber of Commerce met on April 18, 2024, at the Feed Sack. Some of the topics they discussed were the park survey, left over eclipse glasses, and the Walnut Festival.

Park Survey

The Pocket Park survey has 121 responses so far. It is now available online too. Grant-giving organizations like to see signs of significant community buy-in for the projects they fund, so the more responses the better chance of getting funding.

Eclipse Glasses

The Chamber has over half of the 5000 eclipse glasses remaining post-event. At least $500 was made in sales. The Chamber voted on donating the remaining glasses to an organization that distributes them around the world to people in the path of eclipses who might not otherwise get glasses.

Walnut Festival

Walnut Festival work really kicks off next month, but many ideas related to it were discussed. One of the members knows someone who would rent a converted camper that becomes a stage for the weekend. The Chamber also though it would be a good idea to have a low-stimulation quiet room available for people with sensory overstimulation issues.

More Attractions

The Chamber would like to have someone from the Department of Conservation with their fish tank, or one of their water specialists or forestry specialists there to share information. The Chamber would also like to have FFA projects shown off at the festival.

Other Thoughts

The Chamber also said that if they want to make the fun run happen again, they should seek out involvement from one of the school’s teams to help mark out the race path. The Alton Chamber of Commerce also talked about ideas for making black walnuts more present over the weekend. Some of the ideas were black walnut ice cream and black walnut chocolate chip cookies.
