Hegseth Reverts Chaplains To Their Basic Function: Spiritual Backbone

War Secretary Pete Hegseth is implementing sweeping reforms to the United States military Chaplain Corps. The changes are designed to reestablish the group as the spiritual backbone of the armed forces. Hegseth stated the overhaul will shift the corps away from the secular and politically correct policies of previous administrations. [1]

Faith Codes

A major part of the reform is a sharp reduction in military faith codes. The War Department has cut the number of recognized religious groups from 221 to 31. A 2017 Pentagon list had previously included groups such as atheists and witches.

The War Department has cut the number of recognized religious groups from 221 down to 31.

Hegseth called the old system impractical. He noted that 82% of service members who identify as religious rely on just six of those codes.

Spiritual Focus

The reforms also aim to shift chaplains’ focus away from acting as therapists. Hegseth argued that previous administrations watered down the core functions of the corps, trading faith for self-help. He stated that warfighters need conviction and strong spiritual health during combat and crisis.

“They need truth, big T truth. They need conviction. They need a shepherd. Spiritual health is equally important to a service members physical and emotional health,” Hegseth said. [2]

Uniform Changes

Physical changes are coming to chaplain uniforms as well. Chaplains will now display their religious insignia on their uniforms instead of their military ranks.

“A chaplain is first and foremost a chaplain, and an officer second. This change is a visual representation of that fact,” Hegseth added.

These sweeping changes are designed to forge spiritual readiness across the military. The War Department wants to ensure troops have the moral backbone needed to face the intense demands of loss and combat.
