Alton, Mo. – Alton High School hosted the Big Springs Conference Baseball Tournament this week. What a busy week for Alton! Seven schools, including Alton, convened on our baseball field to play their best. And the home-field advantage spurred the Comets to victory.

Monday

The tournament began on Monday with three teams eliminated. Alton had such a great season; they had a bye.

Tuesday

One playoff game started at 4 pm.  Then the Alton Comets played against the Summersville Wildcats. What a thrilling game for Comets’ fans as they cruised past the Wildcats, 17-0.

Wednesday was an off night for all of the teams.

Thursday

Comets Holesapple pitches a fastball.

The Comets made it to the championship playoff game, which started at 6 pm. This would be a tough game, playing the number two seed, Bakersfield. So much pressure was put on the pitchers. Comets’ Holesapple shot his speedballs across the home plate time after time. The opponents had trouble connecting. Meanwhile, Cotter was the pitcher for the Lions. He, too, threw the ball with speed, bringing out the best from the Comets.

Start

The first two innings went scoreless. Excellent pitching, great outfielding, overall, good teamwork. One Lions player tried to steal a base, but was stopped by the Comets!

Third

The third inning saw changes. The Lions continued to be scoreless. However, when the Comets came to bat, they started to make changes. Bases were loaded when Ruddy came to bat. He hit a double and helped two batters run home. The inning ended at 3-0.

Fourth and Fifth

These two innings went quickly, with three batters up and three down, both showcasing the pitchers’ excellence.

Sixth

The sixth inning brought more changes. The game had the same pitchers on both teams. However, the Lions switched to Cotter as pitcher. Nonetheless, the Comets were ready to finish the game. After several players loaded the bases. Then Thornton got to base and a runner in. Clary hit a double and drove in two runners. Then brother Clary also got a double, driving in two runners. The score was 8-0 at the end of the sixth inning.

Seventh

Rudy continued to pitch. Three Lions went to bat; three batters went out. Comets won! Congratulations to each of our players!
