“America’s Time Capsule” is officially sealed and ready for the future. [1] The capsule will be buried at Independence National Historical Park on July 4, 2026. It is set to remain closed until the year 2276.
“The capsule will be buried at Independence National Historical Park on July 4, 2026.”
Inside
The sealed capsule contains many different contributions. Items were collected from all three branches of the U.S. federal government. All 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories also added items to the collection.
Contributions
America250 tentpole programs and select national partners also placed items inside. These partners and institutions added pieces that reflect the people, places, ideas, and innovations shaping the United States at its 250-year mark.
Creation
The physical capsule itself was built carefully. It was created in a machine shop at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This facility is located in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
