Alton, Mo. – On Sunday, July 5, 2026, Alton gathered with others in the county to honor our veterans, promote unity, and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday with a community potluck. While planning and advertising have been going on for months, it was quite a sight to see everyone come out for a relaxed afternoon together.

Veterans
The afternoon began with the West Plains honor guard leading a parade of local veterans. We recited the pledge together, then honored the different branches of the military, including the missing soldier.

Stage
Following the honor guard, patriotic music was piped around the square. Five girls from the Oregon County Pageant gave patriotic recitations. The girls who spoke were Macie Anderson, Peyton Deckard, Michalina Basham, Belle Baker, and Emmy Bliss Baker. They did a terrific job, considering their ages ranged from 5 to 16.

Political candidates spoke, including Crystal Howell and incumbent Representative Keith Elliott. A couple of special numbers included music and a poem.

Food
What is a potluck without food? There was more than enough food for everyone! As some dishes were emptied, more were brought in, including Court Square pizza. What do you like to eat? Pulled pork, ham, turkey? Salads and chips? Cookies, pies, and something with fresh blueberries that was emptied too fast! Fresh fruit was also gone almost as soon as it was set out. Thirsty? There was ice-cold soda, water, and lemonade for all. The line for the free snow cones was endless.

Numbers
Although attendees did not stand still for a count, it was estimated that around 300 people attended the potluck! Red, white, and blue apparel swam through the audience. With that, about twelve businesses participated in the potluck. At least 17 churches had members attend. These were people from all walks of life coming together in unity.

This was a family-friendly event. One person remarked that he had never attended such an inviting event in Alton before.
God blessed the day.
