Winter comes and goes. We get our share of grey days, snow, sleet, and ice. As January crawls on into February, how can you smile? How can you find happiness? What can you do to stay connected when it’s too cold outside? It is not as though one can meet up at the park.

Recent research studied people in cold, dark climates. Their conclusions are interesting.

Norway

People in Norway experience drastic temperatures. When they finally get sunshine, they make the most of it. By strategically placing mirrors, they can reflect as much sunlight as possible into one’s home. Wherever there’s light, people tend to congregate.  Talking together brings happiness.

Siberia

This is another country known for its harsh climate. People do not take vacations in Siberia. Nonetheless, people who live here eat stroganina: raw, paper-thin slices of frozen fish. Basically, it is a fishsicle. These fish have high concentrations of the necessary vitamin D.

Japan

Japanese people have heated tables with blankets attached. This blanket keeps the heat inside, where you will be reading or watching movies. Sounds snuggly!

People

One big drawback of colder weather is simply talking with others.  The elderly cannot get out in freezing weather. Have you set them up with FaceTime? A live chat can go a long way in consoling the cold and anticipating warmer weather.

Although cold temperatures are here, they do not last forever. Spring will arrive soon.
