Like many other states, legislators are in the process of redistricting their states to benefit their party. While this has gone on for years, benefitting the party in control, it is making headline news with the Texas and California gerrymandering. Missouri is also redistricting. Governor Kehoe called a special meeting just for this purpose. This new map has been approved by the House committee.
Committee
Missouri Republicans have taken a step toward redrawing the state’s eight congressional districts. Regarding a map presented by Governor Kehoe, the House Committee voted along party lines, approving the changes.
Map
In this new redistricting map, Oregon County residents would see no change. Nor would the western section of Southern Missouri. Most of the noticeable changes come in the Kansas City area. The new map separates the city into three districts, thereby converting Democratic Representative Cleaver’s seat into a Republican force.
House Vote
Once out of committee, the bill goes in front of the House for a vote before moving along to the Senate.
Dissension
Noticeably, Democrats oppose the new map. One of their complaint is that District 6 is too large; it takes four hours to travel the whole district. They are not aware that District 8 goes from Ava to the Mississippi River.
Others For This
Pro-life advocates are also in favor of the new map. Generally speaking, Republicans are more pro-life than Democrats. Reducing the number of Democratic districts also reduces the number of areas that want to kill babies.
