Stars in a purple sky.

Are you an early riser? Do you enjoy the peaceful serenity of a sunrise unbothered by noise and demands? If you arise early this month, especially on Friday, you may see something extra special: a comet!

The Comet

The comet, formally known as C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS), has been visible in the night sky in April as it approaches Earth and the Sun. This newly discovered comet appears to have been traveling in Earth’s solar system since September. The ancient comet is believed to orbit the sun approximately every 170,000 years and was first spotted in September 2025 by the Pan-STARRS survey in Hawaii.

Vicinity

The closest approach to the sun, a moment known as perihelion, is scheduled for Sunday, April 19. The comet will then have its closest approach to Earth on April 27.

Best Viewing

NASA  noted that early Friday, April 17, might be your best chance to see the comet. Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) is expected to remain visible throughout much of April before sunrise in the Northern Hemisphere.

While it may be visible to the unaided eye, you’ll have better luck in spotting it with a telescope or binoculars. The comet will be visible in the eastern sky
