Columbus Day Has Closings For Government Offices

Christopher Columbus

Monday, October 10, 2022, is Columbus Day. In the United States, we honor the day in remembrance of Christopher Columbus who had the faith to follow his idea that the world is round, not flat. He succeeded and did not fall off the planet. Instead, he discovered the Americas. To pay respect, we close government offices. Here are a few that are closed.

Closed

Alton License Bureau, Alton Public Library, Alton Post Office. Alton Bank, Southern Bank, the bond market [1], and state government offices will be closed on Monday.

Open

Most offices and businesses that are not government-run will remain open on Monday. These include gas stations and grocery stores. The school will be in session. Missouri recognizes the day, but does not utterly shut down.

History

Although often celebrated Columbus Day was not an official holiday until President Johnson signed it into a federal holiday in 1968. Incidentally, it is observed as the second Monday in October. This is the same date that Canada celebrates its Thanksgiving.

So plan ahead if you have important government business to take care of. You may need to choose a different day.
