Back in April of 2022, Elon Musk offered to buy Twitter for 44 billion dollars. After several setbacks and roadblocks, Musk and Twitter came to a deal and on Thursda, October 27, 2022, the deal was sealed. Now, Elon Musk owns Twitter.

Reason For Buying It

There have been many reasons on why Elon Musk bought Twitter. He said that we need Twitter because it allows us to state our opinions and to discuss matters.

The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence.

Setbacks

After initially making the offer in April, Musk reconsidered his offer and contemplated backing out of the deal. Twitter than sued Musk into making him go through with the deal. A trial was set in mid-October for the case. After a request, the judge overseeing the lawsuit moved the trial off until the end of October to give Musk a chance to finish the deal. [1]

A Sealed Deal

After negotiating, Musk and Twitter came to an agreement of $44 billion on October 27, 2022.

First Moves

After Elon Musk bought Twitter, one of his first moves was to fire four of Twitter’s executives. He fired the chief executive, chief financial officer, the top legal and policy executive, and the general counsel. [2]

Changes

Musk wants to change Twitter’s content moderation policies and encourage free speech. He also wants to create “a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints.” [3] Musk also said that while free speech is important, what you say can have consequences.

Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences! [4]
