We are well into January. This month brings grey days, low temperatures, and dismal attitudes. What can you do to change things? Whether for your kids or yourself, here are a few helpful ideas to change that frown into a smile.
Books
Books are a great way to escape reality. While reading books is the number two hobby, how can you incorporate it into your life? For starters, get a journal. Try to read one entire book each month. Write down the title, author, and number of pages. You will feel better after seeing your progress in a couple of months. When you encounter an author you particularly like, you can request additional books from the library. Make a list of your favorite titles to share with a friend.
Bird Watching
As one cannot read all the time, try looking out your window. There are so many birds seeking food. Try scattering seeds in your yard. Have you tried peanut butter on a pine cone? Do you have a bird-watching book and some binoculars nearby? These fluttery friends can make time fly by as you learn their habits.
Crafts
Even adults can take momentary pleasure in the work of our hands. Can you make an igloo from marshmallows? When was the last time you cut snowflakes from construction paper? Working with your hands can be a mood-lifter.
Do you get seed catalogs? What are your plans for the spring? What can you do now in preparation?
