June 6, 1944, will forever go down in history as D-Day. This marked a definitive turn in WWII. While Hitler was planning his taking over the world, the Allies were storming the Western banks of Europe, and Russia was storming Europe’s Eastern borders. Although many gave their lives during important battles this day, this was a day of hope for the world: Allies were back in Europe.

Early Morning

At dawn, American troops landed on French beaches already occupied by the British and American forces. The British and Canadians fought to acquire three beaches. The Americans captured Utah Beach. Then the Allies met resistance. However, by the end of the day, Normandy Beach was captured. This allowed Allied forces to continue inland.

Why Was This Important?

By gaining a foothold in Europe, the Allied forces could march towards Germany. Meanwhile, Russia was also marching towards Germany from the East.

Did D-Day Go As Planned?

No. Not nearly as many vehicles and supplies landed on the beaches as they wanted. However, by the end of June, the Allies had what was needed to travel to Germany. June 6, 1944, is considered a turning point in the war.
