The Preakness Stakes was held on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Medina Spirit, who won the Kentucky Derby, was beat by Rombauer who won the Preakness.
Rombauer was actually a 11-1 favorite, while Medina Spirit was a 2-1 favorite. Medina Spirit failed a drug test after the Kentucky Derby and is still up in the air on being disqualified from winning.
Rombauer was not expected to win; he was the underdog, or should you say underhorse. In the 1 and 3/16 mile race, Medina Spirit actually led for about three-quarters of the race, but he faded in the end. Rombauer passed Medina Spirit and won the Preakness Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths. Midnight Bourbon was second and Medina Spirit was third. This means no Triple Crown winner this year.
The head trainer of Rombauer, Michael McCarthy, said after the race, that even underdogs can be successful.
I’m so proud of this horse, everybody involved. It just goes to show you that small players in the game can be successful as well.
This is the 146th Preakness Stakes. While the Kentucky Derby was on a grass field, the Preakness was on a dirt field.
The last race of the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes. The Belmont Stakes will be held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, on Saturday, June 5, 2021.
