Alton, Mo. – The scenic Missouri group has submitted a proposal to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) to create a system of scenic byways. These byways will cross through 11 counties. If approved, this will be called the Ozark Run Scenic Byway. The plan is to go through Alton.

What Is Proposed

This group wants to preserve natural, rustic, archeological, historic, cultural, and recreational roads for the public. The plan is to use already existing highways. If approved, the route will cover 1,155 miles. Their end goal is to provide travelers with a scenic route through the Ozarks of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

Where Will It Run?

This proposed byway will begin on I-270 near St. Louis. From there, it heads south and curves around through Eminence. The path takes Highway 19 south into Alton. From there the path switches to US Highway 160, taking it west passing through West Plains, towards Branson [1].

Additional Spurs?

There is one spur locally in the plans: taking Highway 19 south to Thayer and then Arkansas.

What Is Your opinion?

This proposal needs acceptance from each city along the route, including Alton. City Hall has scheduled a meeting on September 1, 2022, between 5-7 pm. The public is invited to learn more about the plans and to voice their concerns. The meeting will be at the Alton City Hall.
