In May, an article was published stating that ten secluded towns in south-central Missouri need to be explored. You might be surprised at which towns made the list.

Couch

Unincorporated Couch made number ten in the list. While some may say that there is nothing to Couch, others disagree. Couch does have its school system and voting precinct. Couch was selected because of its uniqueness and seclusion from major cities. Couch itself is surrounded by nature in that there is no ‘downtown Couch.’ Winding roads get you to the heart of Couch, which is the school. But such a school! It’s familial relationships and welcoming smiles that make one feel comfortable.

Koshkonong

Number nine on the list is Koshkonong. With its quaint streets with an old-time feel, who could not spend a day rambling through Koshkonong? Koshkonong is situated away from large cities, but has a US highway running through it, leading to the nearest shopping stations. Koshkonong has low housing density and large property plots.

Thomasville

Then we zip up to the number one secluded town in central Missouri that one should explore: Thomasville. Thomasville has faced difficulties staying afloat over the past few years. But they are afloat, scheduling the next rodeo, Christmas bazaar, or firefighters’ fundraiser. No matter the event, they almost always sell ice cream. The town is settled on the scenic Eleven-Point River. Though it is not wide at this time, it does grow. Thomasville is a town where everyone knows their neighbor. The center meeting point is the old high school, complete with working bathrooms! The residents are friendly and do not mind large crowds for company. Large oak trees adorn the yards. Here, one does not see boarded-up buildings or vandalism. This is a community that cares.

It is nice to know that Oregon County, Missouri, still has the quiet charm of yesteryear.
