Today, June 20, 2025, is the first day of summer. You may be wondering, “What can I do to kickoff summer?” Or you may be thinking, “What can I do throughout the summer months?” Here are 10 things you can do to kickstart your summer as well as fill up the summer months.

#1 Start a Project

One thing you can do to kickstart summer is to plan a project. Write a guest blog post for a website, create a short film, start a tutoring business, create social media posts for someone, try scrap-booking. [1] This will expand your skills as well as keep your summer busy.

#2 Clean

Most people nowadays have more clothes than they actually need. This summer, go through your clothes and get rid of or donate ones you don’t wear. You can also organize your dresser and closet so you know what you have and where you have it.

#3 Start a Summer Journal

If journaling year-round is too much, try keeping a summer journal. [2] Every day, or at least a couple of times a week, write down your goals for the day or week, your thoughts, people you met, things you did. In future years, you can look back on the summer journal and see all you did and remember the activities.

#4 Grow Something

Another thing that you can do to kickstart summer and continue all year is growing something. [3] You can buy something already growing or you can buy seeds. You can buy something to plant in your yard or something to put in a pot and keep in the house or on the porch. The plants are endless: flowers, veggies, fruits, ornamental grasses.

#5 Create a Bucket List

Another activity you can do on the first day of summer is create a summer bucket list. [4] The list can contain simple things such as catching firefly’s, stargazing, or going to the pool, or it can contain more extravaganza things such as going to a national park, flying in a helicopter, or going surfing.

#6 Learn a Foreign Language

An activity that may take all summer to accomplish is to learn a foreign language. With the extra time on your hands, now would be the perfect time to learn that language you’ve always wanted to speak and understand!

#7 Write a Letter

A seventh way to kickstart summer is by writing a letter to yourself. [5] Write information about where you are in life now and where you want to be in five years. Put the letter someplace safe so in five years you can come back to it and read it.

#8 Painting

If you’re more artistically-inclined, try squirt gun painting. [6] Buy some cheap squirt guns, fill them with paint, and spray pieces of paper or canvases. The result will be a beautiful yet abstract piece of art.

#9 Tour Your Town

You may think that you’re town is the most boring town of them all. What you may be surprised to find, though, are hidden gems. Go on a walking tour through your town or city. [7] Walk or drive down those side streets you didn’t know were there. Visit the parks. Go to the local museums. You might be surprised at what you find.
