Nation’s 250th Birthday Celebration Planning Underway

250th Anniversary of the United States

250th Anniversary of the United States

Alton, Mo. – July 4, 2026, marks the 250th birthday of the United States of America. Communities across the nation are planning what to do and when to make this a memorable occasion. Alton is doing the same. The chamber met and discussed a few items, encouraging members to come next month with more ideas of how to celebrate. At the On The Road To 250 meeting, they discussed the importance of the pledge, national songs, and how to raise community awareness of this historical event.

When Was The Meeting?

The On The Road To 250 meeting was on Thursday, January 22, 2026. They will meet again in two weeks to follow up on ideas.

Testimonies

Recording some old-timers as they tell the history of Oregon County recurs in the meetings. As the weather is cold now, hopefully this will gain momentum as warmer weather arrives. This would be saved for years to come so knowledge will not be lost.

Decorations

Of course, decorations are a must. Fly the flag and display red, white, and blue banners. Both businesses and homes can participate. Plan on growing patriotic flowers.

Songs/Recitations

Singing patriotic songs would be nice, either planned on the square or performed elsewhere, unrehearsed. We do not sing them enough. If there are men who want to form a barbershop quartet, that would gain attention. Dressing up like a notable hero of the past and walking around the square, or even the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, will bring attention to the date. This is not only for men. What about Betsy Ross? Or Dolly Madison?

Anyone can stand in a corner and read an important document that founded our country. Churches can do this as well.

Pledge And Anthem

We discussed the importance of reciting our pledge and singing the national anthem. These are getting forgotten, as too often we just hear music.

Events

The Culture Club is looking into a parade for this celebration. As people plan events for this celebration, and it does not have to be on July 3, let AltonMo.com know. We will put it on the calendar so others can plan around your event.

People and businesses are getting excited about the possibilities. How will you remember the day?

The next meeting will be on Thursday, February 5, at 6:30 pm. However, Jerry is at Collins Coffee most Thursdays. Feel free to stop him and share the ideas you want to share.
