The weather outside is frightful. Temperatures are so low that no one wants to go out. With an extended cold spell in front of us, what can you do to keep boredom away? Even electronic games get old after a while. How about table games with the family? As you are stuck together for a period of time, try building relationships with your children. They need it, and you could use the laughter.
With that, we came up with our favorite games to play with families.
Young Children
Even the youngest children can learn UNO in little time. By matching colors, they quickly learn numbers and words. Not knowing what the young one will do makes this game exciting. Checkers are a fun diversion to boredom.
Elementary Age Children
These children need more thought process. Try adding Sorry to the game table. There is Connect Four and Battleship, too. Life is good at this age. The Five Second Game brings laughter at this age.
Older Kids
Older children can handle the decision-making of Monopoly and Yahtzee. The game of Clue helps them add clues together and draw conclusions. At this age, their vocabulary has grown. Try adding Scrabble, Logo, Words Are Hard, or Scattegories to the table. If they want to think more, try chess or the 3 Minute game.
Adults
Grandparents are not known for being as noisy as the grandchildren. But they bring a wealth of experience to a game. They may like Scrabble or Pictionary. Dominoes are always a favorite, no matter how many people there are. And do not forget about your neighbors. During this cold spell, invite them over for a game or two.
While younger children’s games can be played at older ages, they may not always spell well enough to compete in Scrabble matches. As the cold temperatures are here to stay for a while, mix up the games and set up matches. The week will be over before you know it.
