The United States Postal Service is increasing the prices of mailing services this summer. They filed a notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission seeking new rates to take effect on July 12. [1] The changes include a 4-cent increase for a First-Class Mail Forever stamp, taking the price from 78 cents to 82 cents.

New Rates

The proposed changes will raise product prices by about 4.8 percent. Metered letters will go up from 74 cents to 78 cents. Domestic postcards will rise from 61 cents to 65 cents.

The proposed changes will raise product prices by about 4.8 percent.

International postcards and letters will also see a price hike, moving from $1.70 to $1.75. The price for an additional ounce on single-piece letters will remain 29 cents.

Financial Needs

The Postal Service is currently facing a severe financial crisis. Operating costs continue to rise. Because the Postal Service receives no tax dollars, it relies entirely on selling postage and services to fund its operations.

Next Steps

Even with these price increases, the Postal Service states its mailing prices remain among the most affordable in the world. The Postal Regulatory Commission will review the proposed changes before they can take effect.
