Beat the Heat: Keep Your Electrolytes Balanced Today

Social media platforms and grocery stores are increasingly promoting electrolyte beverages and enhancers. When individuals exercise and sweat heavily, drinking plain water is only one part of proper hydration. [1] Replacing electrolytes is necessary to maintain safe fluid balance in the body.f]

The human body can absorb plain water without electrolytes, but the process is not as efficient as electrolyte-infused beverages or water paired with a salty snack. During intense physical activity or in hot climates, electrolyte water helps with retention and balance within the cells. This allows for faster rehydration and replaces essential minerals lost through sweat.

While plain water is beneficial for general hydration, electrolyte-enriched fluids are advantageous for maintaining proper levels during prolonged periods of sweating. The primary electrolytes lost through sweat are sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These minerals are required for fluid balance, muscle function, and nerve signaling. Losing electrolytes without replacing them leads to dehydration.

Hydration Guidelines and Risks

Humans can sweat up to three liters per hour during intense exercise in hot weather. With a 1% loss of body weight from water loss, individuals will experience symptoms of dehydration, including headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

For those working outdoors, gardening in hot weather, or playing sports under direct sun, guidelines recommend drinking eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes during the activity. Continued hydration of approximately one liter per hour is advised afterward.

To prevent dehydration, individuals should aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Adding hydrating foods such as cucumbers, watermelon, and pineapple to a daily diet helps maintain high hydration levels. Creating custom hydrating beverages at home is also a cost-effective and flexible way to stay hydrated.
