The United States of America turns 250 years old on July 4 this year. That is a monumental age worthy of celebrations all year long. Whether you are part of a larger organization, a small organization, or a single family member, there is something you can do to celebrate! Here are a few ideas to get you started. Plan now, though. Patriotic colors will disappear from stores quickly.
Resources
Missouri is acting on the nation’s birthday. Show Me 250 has plenty of resources and ideas. Meanwhile, America 250 is set up for groups and resources. You can see what others are doing and when.
Businesses
Businesses can do many things. Try decorating inside with patriotic colors. Perhaps you can paint your windows as they do at Christmas. Offer special birthday sales at different times. Can you sponsor someone reading a famous passage, like the Declaration of Independence or the Mayflower Compact? Do you know someone who knows the history of Oregon County? Can you help organize a band or parade?
Churches
Churches played a significant role in the formation of our country. Most forefathers recognized God as over all. That said, can you instruct your laypeople on important speeches or actions done by these forefathers that represented their faith as well as their national duty? Is your congregation learning patriotic songs, such as our national anthem? Do you have musicians in your church? Can they organize a layman’s choir?
Homeschool Groups And Schools
So much can be done here. Educating the next generation on our historical documents and why America is so special is a must. How can you make history come alive? Can anyone do reenactments? What about art projects with large-scale documents, like the Bill of Rights?
Individuals
Do you have a home? Try planting (when it gets warmer) red, white, and blue foliage outside. Place flags along the driveway. Put USA signs in your yard. And what about a t-shirt or hat commemorating this time? America 250 has plenty of swag.
With all of this, groups are meeting to plan what to do and when. The 11 Point Productions will meet on Thursday in Alton. Everyone is invited!
