Alton, Mo. – America is celebrating its 250th birthday this year. Festivities and activities are already happening. While some events began last fall (walked 250 miles before July 4), other activities are in the planning stages. Alton is planning various events through the culture club or individual organizations. One idea suggested on the America 250 website was to host a community-wide potluck!

Who Would Host It?

Alton is looking at churches to host the potluck. After all, who knows potlucks better than churches? The Alton Ministerial Alliance would be overall, with different people from each church taking charge of specific areas, such as the main meal, drinks, desserts, tables, and music. There would be no cost for anyone to attend.

Who Would Attend?

This is a community-wide event, open to church-goers and non-church-goers. All ages and demographics would come. Even if one did not bring food, was there ever a potluck that ran out of food? Even regional communities that will not have a community potluck could come.

When Is This?

Nationwide, it is planned for Sunday, July 5, 2026, in the afternoon.

Where Would It Be?

This will be on the square in Alton. Alton is just the right town for this, not too big or small. We have a courthouse where community members congregate.

What Now?

We are looking for interest in this potluck. It would take coordinated planning on a large scale. We are looking for churches and individuals who can organize and bring. We are looking for ideas, like musicians from churches or piped-in music. Maybe a speaker? What are your thoughts? You can email me at jennifer@rubydoodle.com.

Now is the time to begin planning to make this a success.
