Alton, Mo. – It has been a week since the Great American Eclipse passed our way. Most people made the most of the situation, inviting friends and family over and hosting eclipse parties. Businesses geared up for the extra traffic. Additional law enforcement officers showed themselves around our county. This entire weekend was treated like a three-day holiday.

Campers

While local campgrounds filled their reservation spots months in advance, local homeowners rented out their yards to tourists. Most homeowners said they would do it again to meet newcomers, celebrate the event together, and earn a few extra dollars. Campsites along the river were full. Almost every campsite had a vehicle with a license plate from a different state. And most campsites had families- groups of more than four people.

The parks opened up for campers. While they looked rather abandoned on Thursday and Friday, campers were parking everywhere by Sunday.

Entertainment

Although Alton opted out of most entertainment, they did host the opening of the Oregon County Farmer’s Market. Although cold and breezy, more visitors arrived as the morning progressed. Thayer had a variety of festivities, including live music and car shows.

As early as Thursday, local people began noticing an increase in traffic. Primarily along US 63, those going to or from work could expect long delays. Saturday and Monday, traffic was thick in Alton.

The Big Show

Then came the moment everyone was waiting for totality! Did you notice a change in temperature? Just as it got totally dark, crowds ooo’d and ahhh’d together as though on cue. Bats even came out, and livestock quieted down.

Did anyone bring out a colander to watch the moon’s phases? Did you take pictures? This was something that you will want to remember for a long time. And it was orchestrated by God.
