The AltonMo.com field team went around to local Fourth of July celebrations-Alton, Thomasville, and Thayer- and polled the locals on United States history. Four questions were asked to the locals: “How many stripes are on the U.S. flag?” “What was signed on July 4, 1776?” “Who wrote ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’?” and “What is the most famous symbolic landmark in America today?” Here are the percentages to the answers (percentages are rounded).

Second Question

The next question asked was “What was signed on July 4, 1776?” While that should have been a given, fewer citizens knew this answer than the first question asked.
