The Amish missionaries to Haiti are all free! Back on October 16, 2021, sixteen U.S. citizens along with one Canadian individual were kidnapped. Without assistance from the American government, only God Almighty’s intervention, these persons are all free.

Who Was Kidnapped?

Sixteen Americans and one Canadian were kidnapped. They were members of the Amish and Mennonite groups. Among them were five children including an 8 month old. The Mawozo gang abducted them . The 400 abductors demanded $1 million per person for their release. These volunteers were from Wisconsin, Ohio, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Oregon, and Ontario, Canada. They were helping at an orphanage in Haiti.

When Were They Released?

On November 21, 2021, two hostages were released. Then again on December 5, three more were released. Then on December 16, the remaining 12 hostages escaped their abductors.

How Did They Escape?

These kidnapped victims did not waste time in unplanned circumstances. They quickly set up a schedule of prayer, songs, and encouragement. Although they had no Bible in their possession, they had memorized many verses to give comfort. Meanwhile, they asked God about deliverance. Timing was critical. During the night, the victims put on their shoes and packed pouches of water. They left through a closed and blocked door, up a path past numerous guards. The night stars guided them towards safety. Later the next day, someome helped them find a phone and call for help. The Coast Guard flew them to Florida.

Christian Aid Ministries spokesman Weston Showalter said,

The hostages desire that God be glorified for the way He cared for them during their time in captivity.

He went on to say,

Freedom is not a place… The hostage-takers are the true hostages [1].

These individual missionaries had an opportunity to live out their faith, making Scripture real and timely, showing their captors the love of Almighty God. Now back home, they are again showing the love of God in His strength in orchestrating their release.
