Summer is winding down but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a last float trip for the year. Whether you’re floating a well-know river in southern Missouri, such as the Current River, or a more obscure river such as the Eleven Point River, here are five things you should know before going on your float.
#1 Decide the River
One of the first things you need to do is to decide what river you’re going to float. Common rivers in south-central Missouri include the North Fork River, Eleven Point River, Jacks Fork River, Current River, and Black River. [1] The Eleven Point River is one of the less known rivers.
#4 Floating
Another thing to do before you book your float is decide how you’re going to float it, and how long you’re going to float. There are several ways to go on a float trip: kayak, canoe, raft, and tube. You’re also going to want to decide how long you’re going to float on the river and what accesses you’ll get on and off at. Another thing to decide is if you’ll drive yourself, or if you’ll shuttle from a canoe rental.
#3 Weather
An important aspect to consider is the weather. Although you can only plan so much when it comes to the weather, especially when you book more than a week in advance, it is still good to be aware of the area’s weather at the time of year you’re floating.
#4 Things to Bring
When you pack for your float, there are several things you should bring: a lifejacket (unless one is being provided), a drybag, matches, water, snacks, compass, sun protection, small first-aid kit, and a knife. [2]
#5 Know the Area
In case you finish up your float early, bad weather comes in, or you want to go someplace to eat, know the area where you will be floating. Look for springs, mills, parks, or historic sites you can visit if you have extra time on your trip or if bad weather comes in. Look at nearby towns for restaurants to eat at.
