This year starts with a viewing of six planets across the sky. Although weather and clouds will determine what can be seen, six planets, including the moon, will be visible shortly after sunset.
Which Can I See?
In the evening sky, one can see Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune. That night is almost the full moon, too.
When Will They Be Visible?
On Saturday, February 28, 2026, these planets will be visible shortly after sunset. The very best time is 45 minutes after sunset. One does not need to wake up in the wee hours of the morning to view them!
Where, Exactly, Are They?
Jupiter is first. It will be a bright light in the southern sky near the moon. Closer to the horizon and to the west, one can see Saturn. It will be lower than Jupiter but higher than the other four. Even further west, Venus and Mercury are close together. Once it is fully dark, it may be difficult to see them. Uranus and Neptune are farther over and dimmer. You may need binoculars or a telescope to see them.
Viewing
While one could see these planets into the beginning of March, some, like Mercury, will quickly fade away.
This is a moment to take advantage of. The timing is perfect. Sunset comes at 5:59 pm. One does not need to stay up late or rush around in the morning to avoid being late. One can look at the night sky in a relaxed fashion.
