Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. It is a time to express your love. So, what will you give your loved one? Are they expecting something? Here are ideas to get you thinking.

History

When my children were younger, I gave them inexpensive heart-shaped candy boxes to show my love. I taught them what a woman wants: chocolate, diamonds, and flowers. While this changes over time, my children were taught to think of the other person when giving a gift. Why did I choose these three? Chocolate can be cheap. We have many rocks on our property resembling diamonds. What they deem beautiful is worthy of a gift. Flowers can be picked by the youngest, who has no money—beauty for their mother.

Adults

As adults, we may want and expect more than shiny rocks. Generally, women expect something from their close friends. However, a woman often gives something to her close friends. However, there is a divide as to what women want and what men think a woman wants.

Men Think A Woman Wants

In a recent poll, men thought that on this day, women wanted candy, flowers, and perhaps jewelry. If he feels generous, he can take her to a nice restaurant. That seems basic.

What Women Do Want

What a woman wants has so many variables! But it boils down to this: a woman wants to feel valuable. Will she be noticed when she is not there? Sharing chores, listening without the television, and doing something with only her make a big difference in her life. She realizes she does a lot, but to be appreciated for half of what she does would lift her spirits. A meal out is nice. But a meal at home is also nice- if she does not have to prepare it or clean up afterward. How about watching a movie of her choice, not his?

So before you shop for this special day, you may want to consider asking what your special someone really wants.
