The real question was, how has he been collecting Disability from California since 2003 and still able to do the job of a working Sheriff? Another question is how long was he really with the LAPD in a working mode? Transparent California has him listed as 10 years , not 12, 13 or 14. Also according to the LAFPP he was given disability and not a 15 year pension. Is he willing to give up his disability retirement in order to serve the citizens of Oregon County?

I happen to be Kevin’s supervisor at LAPD and have an unique perspective of his qualifications and history as a law enforcement officer. Kevin was selected to be a LAPD motor officer which is a very coveted and competitive position which few officers obtain . As a member of ” Motors ” he was also selective to work a special crime response unit to be the first officer on the scene on a motorcycle to handle hot calls were lives are at stake. A motor cycle crash ended his career prematurely but not his commitment to be in law enforcement . There seems to be a question on a LAPD disability pension . A disability pension does not preclude a officer from ever working in the field again . Many officers have gone to work in other departments after their injuries have healed . I myself retired after 25 years with a disability pension and have worked worked for 20 years in a LAPD uniform as a film officer armed and riding a motorcycle. When an officer receives a disability pension the department says that they do not have a light duty job for the officer even if the officer doesnt want the disability pension. By the way this was Kevin’s situation he did not want to retire but his injuries would take longer than a year to recover. A disability pension is really a workers comp award .Los angeles is self insured and handle their own workers compensation hearings. So when I saw the comment that inferred some nefarious motive by Kevin because he wanted to still be a law enforcement I needed to set the record place. Their are hundreds of officers with disability pensions who are proudly still working for police agencies with no problems from the LAPD.
I contacted the pension dept today and told them this event and they supported my assessment.
