Foxborough, MA. – The Kansas City Chiefs beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots this Sunday. It was a tight game that kept the audience at the edge of their seat, but the score at the end was 23-16. This win helped the Chiefs win the AFC West for the fourth consecutive time in a row. Kansas City also ruined the Patriots 21 successive home game wins streak.

Patriots Take the Early Lead

The Patriots versus Chiefs game began with a worrying start for the Chiefs when it looked like the Chiefs would have to forfeit the game because some of their equipment was left in New Jersey by accident. The Chiefs did manage to get their equipment back in time for them to participate in the game, and the kickoff was continued.

On the Patriot’s first drive, they made a touchdown and the extra point; these were the only points they scored in the first half.

When the Chiefs got the ball, it was intercepted right away, which was Chiefs quarterback’s Patrick Mahomes’ third interception of the season. The Patriots ended up punting the ball to the Chiefs, which they converted into a 3-point field goal. Chiefs fans received a scare when Patrick Mahomes hurt his hand in the first quarter. He continued to stay on the field though their current play but was checked out on the bench after the drive was done.

The Patriots tried to get three more points on the board before the first quarter ended, but the Chiefs special teams blocked it and returned it for a couple of yards.

Chiefs Take Over

Kansas City had a little slow start but picked it up in the second quarter. At the beginning of the second quarter, the Chiefs got a touchdown from Mecole Hardman and the extra point.

Then Kansas City’s defense Bashaud Breeland made a clean interception of the ball intended for a Patriots receiver shortly after the Patriots received the ball.

Then the Chiefs did a trick play just yards from the endzone. Tight end Travis Kelce received the snap, faked it off, then ran into the endzone for a touchdown putting the score to 17-7. To close out the first half, Kansas City made a 3-point field goal. The halftime score was 20-7 with the Chiefs in the lead.

The Chiefs got the first points in the second half with another 3-point field goal. The Patriots got the ball back, but it ended up resulting in nothing.

The Chiefs tried to get some more points on the board couldn’t push past the Patriots defense, ending in having to punt it. But the Patriots defense blocked the punt and gained some extra yards for their offense. It was Chiefs punter, Dustin Colquitt’s, first time in 6 years that one of his punts had been blocked.

After that, New England started getting into a rhythm, somewhat and got a touchdown. They tried to get a 2-point conversion, but the Kansas City defense stopped them.

Chiefs Win

In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs fumbled the ball, and the Patriots recovered it. The Patriots did not get a touchdown, but they did get a 3-point field goal.

The Patriots, feeling the pressure to win, tried to stop the Chiefs from getting any more points, which they succeeded in doing. Now all they had to do was to make some points and win the game.

Kansas City did not get any points on their drive, and New England got it back. It looked like it would end up being a touchdown, but the Chief’s defensive player, Bashaud Breeland, slapped the ball away from Edelman at the last minute.

The Patriots would’ve had at least one extra touchdown during the game if it weren’t for the refs declining a touchdown, but New England had used up all of their challenge cards and could not challenge the ruling on a would-be touchdown. The refs marked three yards out from the endzone, but if you look at it in slow motion, you can clearly see that he was in bounds. The final score of the game was 23-16, with the Chiefs winning.

Next Game

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs quarterback, completed 26 of 40 throws, threw for 283 yards, threw for one touchdown, threw for one interception, and had six carries for 6 yards. The Denver Broncos meet the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on December 15. The game will begin at noon Central Time. The Chiefs have already beaten the Broncos this year, and it was also in that game where Patrick Mahomes dislocated his kneecap. Hopefully, that won’t happen again.
