250th Anniversary of the United States

Alton, Mo. – The first meeting of the ‘On The Road To 250’ was held on Thursday, January 8, at Collins ‘ Coffee on the square in Alton. Jerry Hackworth led the meeting. Several discussion points and new ideas were shared. Those attending were optimistic about the future. The goal of the meeting was to plan a celebration of our nation’s birthday. While the official birthday is July 4, there will be ongoing patriotic celebrations throughout the year.

Different ideas for larger displays were presented. While these were tabletop ideas, plans for larger models of the Declaration of Independence and other historical documents were discussed.

History

What do you know about the history of Oregon County? Do you know someone who does? The 11 Point Productions group is seeking individuals who can film or record their stories. We do not want to lose our history.  What do you know about the CCC or the WA, or the experiences in Wilderness, or the tram crossings? These details are not known by most residents.

What Can You Do?

It was repeatedly noted that this is a community- and county-wide issue. While Alton residents were in attendance, they wanted input from those in Thayer, Myrtle, Couch, Koshkonong, Rover, and Thomasville. They are inviting interested people from all walks of life in each area of our county to come and see what is being planned. You probably will not be asked to do anything, but you may be asked to join a group to help start an event.

Everyone can get excited about celebrating our nation’s birthday. Church choirs can learn patriotic songs, along with school choirs. Businesses can paint their windows for the season. Flags and red, white, and blue decorations can adorn walkways and roadsides.

You, too, can be a big fan of the Declaration of Independence. Start thinking now about what you can do. The next meeting will be on Thursday, January 22, at 6:30 pm.
