The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants to remind people that Missouri is home to an estimated 1,000+ black bears, most of which are in the southern part of the state. The bears leave their winter dens to search for food as spring gets underway. MDC reminds Missourians to “Be BearWise.”

Spring Bear

MDC Furbearer Biologist Nate Bowersock said that residents should consider removing or securing bear attractants from their property, such as bird feeders, trash, barbeque grills, pet food, and food waste.

Bowersock said black bears become more active in the spring as they are on a mission to find food. It is essential to keep areas free of food attractants, and letting bears find natural foods is in everyone’s best interest. If you see a bear, let the animal be and enjoy the sighting.

He noted that intentionally feeding bears can be dangerous, as it can also lead bears to cause significant damage to property while searching for food.

Suggestions

The MDC offers these suggestions to protect yourself from unwanted bear encounters:

  • Store garbage, recyclables, and compost in secure buildings or bear-proof containers.
  • Keep grills and smokers clean and store them inside.
  • Don’t leave pet food outside. Feed pets each meal, then remove the empty containers.
  • Refrain from using bird feeders in bear country from April through November. If in use, hang them at least 10 feet high and 4 feet away from any structure. Remember that even if a bear cannot get to the birdseed, the scent could still attract it to the area.
  • Use electric fencing to keep bears away from beehives, chicken coops, vegetable gardens, orchards, and your personal property.
  • Keep campsites clean. Store all food, toiletries, and trash in a secure vehicle or strung high between two trees. Do not keep food or toiletries in a tent; do not burn or bury garbage or food waste.

Encounters

If you do happen across a bear, make a lot of noise, like clapping or singing. This could make the bear turn away. Do not travel alone. Walk with your dog.
