It’s coming to that time of year when the kids go off to school with all of their new school supplies and clothes. From Friday, August 4, 2023, through Sunday, August 6, 2023, there will be no sales tax on school supplies. [1]
Clothes
One of the items that will be exempt from sales tax this weekend is clothing. Clothing includes shirts, pants, shorts, shoes, and other apparel but does not include accessories.
Computers
Computers include any laptop, desktop, or tower computer system.
Supplies
School supplies are classified as any item a student will use in school, including notebooks, calculators, writing utensils, art supplies, and any other school items.
Summary
Here is what the sales tax exemption is limited to:
- Clothing: any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
- School supplies: not to exceed $50 per purchase
- Computer software: taxable value of $350 or less
- Personal computers: not to exceed $1,500
- Computer peripheral devices: not to exceed $1,500
- Graphing calculators: not to exceed $150 [2]
