Veterans Day is a national holiday that Americans honor on November 11 each year. It was this date that World War I was over, 11/11/1918. Americans as well as businesses are encouraged to fly the flag at half-mast and at 11:00 a.m. the country observes a moment of silence. On Veterans Day, we honor all veterans. This contrasts with Memorial Day in which we honor those who gave their lives for our country. This is usually a day to thank a veteran.

When Did This Begin?

Veterans Day began on November 11, 1918, at 11:00 a.m. when the Great War ended. President Wilson started this as “Armistice Day”, one year past the end of the war. He stated,

Reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for their victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed is and because of the opportunity it has given Americans to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation.

Name And Date Changes

Congress changed the name to Veterans Day in June 1954. In 1968, Veterans Day was designated a Monday holiday. President Ford moved to have Veterans Day permanently held on November 11 annually. This date holds historical and sentimental significance for Americans.

Local Observances

Although many schools in the area do not dismiss for Veterans Day, the schools do try to honor those who served in the military. Alton School will have its annual Veterans Day program at 1:00 p.m. Mammoth Spring School recognizes the veterans at 1:15 p.m. West Plains School honors veterans at 10:00 a.m. The local senior centers are honoring veterans with special meals; Alton Senior Center is offering free lunch for veterans. [1] Typically, some cities had parades. However, due to COVID fears, several cities have canceled their parades. Libraries are also closed.

On this day, Americans fly flags at half mast in remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice: their life. At 11:00 a.m. this country holds a moment of silence. This is a federal holiday which means post offices, banks, and government offices to close.
