A new year, 2022, is fast approaching. With it are new laws becoming effective in Missouri. Here’s a summary of five of them [1].

Minimum Wage

With wages increasing around the country, Missouri is trying to keep its citizens in the competition. Proposition B passed in 2018 and raises the minimum wage to $11.15 for private businesses. This applies unless your retail or service business has gross annual sales of less than $500,000.

Mental Health Insurance

This is a requirement for insurers to provide coverage for certain mental health conditions.

Child Placement/ Adoption

Prior to 2022, there was a tax credit available for parents adopting a child of special needs. This tax credit will now be available for all adoptive parents. Included alongside this is a new tax deduction for expenses incurred in childcare for foster parents.

Students’ Right To Know

Beginning on January 1, 2022, the state Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development will be required to “annually collect and compile specified information to help high school students make more informed decisions about their futures and ensure they are adequately aware of the costs of four years of colleges and alternetive career paths.”

Police Use Of Force

This requires law enforcement agencies to report local data on use-of-force incidents to the national Use of Force Data Collection administered by the FBI.

These are just five new laws taking effect. They apply to citizens and residents in Missouri.
