On February 28, 2022, Senator Hawley vowed to introduce legislation that will reopen energy production in the United States. As President, Biden stopped much of the U.S. oil drilling and fracking, thus putting our oil dependency on foreign countries. As gas prices skyrocket due to the unrest in Europe, anticipation of record inflation is imminent. Here is what he is looking at.

What He Is Suggesting

Senator Hawley is dubbing this bill ‘The American Energy Independence Act of 2022.’ His aim is to

reverse President Biden’s shutdown of the American energy sector and return American energy to full production [1].

This bill comes as oil prices jump to over $119 per barrel, as of March 7 [2]. The last time the price was over $100 per barrel was in 2014.

What Biden Is Doing

Simce the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Biden is issuing sanctions against the company that is building the pipeline from Russia to Germany. However, experts hear that these sanctions will raise fuel prices even more. Russia is one of the largest producers of oil and natural gas.

Hawley’s Bill

Hawley wants to ensure that the United States achieves

full energy independence and low energy costs for its citizens [3].

This bill will instruct federal agents to identify andf rescind existing regulations that are bent on reducing America’s energy. This bill proposes th defund contributions to any provisions of the paris Climate agreement. It will lower the ‘social cost of carbon’ to $0. Lastly, it will rescind the Biden administration’s moratorium on oil and natural gas leases on public lands. It also restores the permit for the Keystone Pipeline, running between Canada and the U.S.

Senator concluded by saying,

The United States cannot afford to be energy dependent on our enemies [4].

What People Are Saying

Some people are commenting that this bill will never pass as Congress is dominated by Democrats. Nonetheless, some people think that that may be Hawley’s point. By having Democrats vote against the Keystone Pipeline and other energy sources, just preceding the elections will put these individuals against the populace, possibly helping them lose their seat in Congress.
