Most people have heard of Alcatraz. And, if you have been to southern Florida, you are likely familiar with Alligator Alley. Mix those two with illegal aliens, and you have Alligator Alcatraz. This is a Florida original.

Alcatraz

Most people have heard of Alcatraz. It is a small island located off the coast of California. At various times, it has served as a fort, a military prison, and a maximum-security federal penitentiary. It is known for being escape-proof. It is so well-known that a movie was made about someone who tried to escape.

Alligator Alley

Alligator Alley is a stretch of 1-75 in southern Florida. Traveling through the Everglades,  sightseers frequently see alligators along their route.

Together?

Florida has announced the construction of a detention center for illegal immigrants on a former airfield in the Everglades. It is already dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.”  The facility will primarily consist of tents.

The new facility will be able to hold an estimated 5,000 illegal immigrant detainees once completed, with its remote location making escape difficult. Florida Attorney General Uthmeier highlighted the remoteness of the site, surrounded by wildlife such as alligators and pythons, as a novel security measure. He remarked that potential escapees will have nowhere to go and nowhere to hide.
